Once there was fire in our eyes
But then came haughty winter, and
Out in the snow, we said good-bye.

She closed her eyes, cold and hard and dry.
We went our separate ways one last time, but
Once there was fire in our eyes.

Now that spark is quenched, and I cry--
She left me here to drown in misery when
Out in the snow, we said good-bye.

But to be calm and strong I must try!
I'm lost without my soul aflame, but
Once there was fire in our eyes.

I'm searching for it still and I don't know why,
'cause I can't find that flame; I knew I'd get burned when
Out in the snow, we said good-bye.

Engulfed in sorrow and now in ice,
There's nothing left to wait for but the spring...

Once there was fire in our eyes
But then, out in the snow, we said good-bye.
Villanelle
M. Knight
2009

I'm taking a creative writing class at school this year, which is really forcing me to get off my writers-block-afflicted butt and get to work. I'll be posting my favorite pieces as they come.

Turn Away is a villanelle (basically a 19-line lyrical poem that's a lot more fun to read than it is to write.) I wrote this one a few weeks ago when I was just learning the form, but it's really good. Not based on personal experience - I was talking to one of my friends and trying to imagine how bad it must feel to be in a break-up, which ended up inspiring me to write this!
